In Praise of America

In Praise of America

Dear Editor;

The Rockaway peninsula weekly newspaper, The Wave, is to be commended on its journalistic skills in coverage and reporting the events of the "Day of Infamy", which occurred on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001.

Throughout the paper, from its front page, editorial section, various columns and advertisers, the expressions of sympathy, consolations and offers to help were heart wrenching. In particular, were the person-to-person interviews of the men caught in the wreckage, but luckily they escaped with their lives intact. The detailed descriptions of a black nothingness, their thoughts and feelings were chilling and unbelievable.

Through the years, we had taken the safety and security of the United States for granted, with the "It can’t happen here attitude." But it did.

This unprecedented attack on America was committed by a group of suicidal terrorists using hijacked planes to crash into monumental structures, such as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, causing mass destruction and death to thousands of innocent people and buildings. Part of the Pentagon, in Washington, was also hit, causing further death and damage.

In times of extreme trouble, people show their true colors. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani proved to be outstanding in his performance throughout the ordeal. He states he will rebuild and that the public should try to go about their everyday chores as best they can.

President Bush vowed that justice would be served. The terrorists will be weeded out throughout the world and dealt with accordingly in order to prevent future catastrophes.

It is unfortunate that it took a tragedy of this magnitude to bring people closer together and appreciate each other, regardless of race, creed, color or religion. God bless America; what she stands for and what she means.
