Feeling of Envy

Feeling of Envy

Dear Editor:

The New York Post of September 1st, in its living and entertainment section, focused specifically on the Brooklyn beaches called them the Brooklyn Riviera.

The listing of the beaches was Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and Sheepshead Bay.

As a Rockawayite, I experienced a feeling of envy.

Each beach mentioned was stated as having a special life of its own offering the public a variety of ethnic eating places, entertainment, the boardwalks filled with people during evening hours and fishing boats embarking on trips. Rockaway Beach could and should have similar offerings to attract public interest and attention.

Why has Rockaway Park been cast aside and injured? Yet at the same time, Rockaway has been used as the dumping ground of excessive city housing projects, nursing homes health related facilities, medical mills.

Let us not forget the acres, upon acres of empty choice shorefront property lying fallen for more than 30 years-waiting -a tragic oversight.

We have had promises of this, promises of that but into it all nothing has materialized.

Perhaps one day, Rockaway Beach will be developed and recognized as the Queens Riviera.

I hope during my lifetime.

MILDRED SCHULMAN
