Stolen Flags, Stolen Honor

Stolen Flags, Stolen Honor

Dear Editor:

In response to the letter to the Editor, from Barbara Rios (9-22-01), concerning people who took her American Flag.

I have a similar problem, but on a larger scale. I personally bought 1 gross (144) American Flags to decorate Beach 116th Street for Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th and Labor Day. For all the above occasions I have decorated Beach 116th Street. I was always amazed and hurt when the American Flags were taken.

On Memorial Day, I decorated Beach 116th Street to show respect to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, their lives; so that I, and millions of Americans could be free. As I watched the surviving Veterans marched down Rockaway Beach Blvd., very proud, I looked at the lovely display of American Flags, which I placed to greet the Marchers, I was in shock, most of them had been stolen.

Holiday after Holiday, I never complained about the missing flags, but when I put them out last week to show that Rockaway is not only a very American Community, but we are also in mourning. I wanted the World to know, we not only mourn our losses but we will always be Proud to Fly the American Flag.

I am sorry to say not only are all the flags gone…But the Tribute which I intended was also gone.

To the people who took the American Flags, you not only desecrated my tribute, you also broke one of God’s Commandments. THOU SHALL NOT STEAL!
