All three of the candlelight vigils held last Sunday were a large success. More than 3,000 people showed up at Fort Tilden for the West End vigil. That event was attended by Senator Chuck Schumer, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Borough President Claire Shulman, State Senator Malcolm Smith and City Council President Peter Vallone. It was a night of healing and of prayer. The most touching point of the night was a huge, spotlighted American Flag that hung from the extended ladder of Ladder Truck 137. After Giuliani made his speech, a number of people in the audience shouted, "How can you leave us?" A Moslem cleric, who spoke, demanding justice for those who were killed in the tragedy, got a loud round of applause from the audience. The most rousing speech came from Congressman Chuck Schumer, who sounded more like a hawk than the dove he usually represents. The East End vigil, held at the Far Rockaway fire house, hosted about 300 people. It was interesting that none of the prominent politicians from that area showed up for the moving event. More ... Federal and State laws are in place to assist special education students who are preparing to leave school. In the past youngsters would have simply "aged out" of the school system and would have had the burden of finding continuing appropriate training or placements. More ... The WTC disaster created clouds of smoke that hung heavy over the city and brought the stench of burning rubber throughout many, many streets in New York City for the past two weeks, according to its residents. More ... To celebrate my daughter, Dorothy Farrell's birthday of September 20th we enjoyed a delicious dinner last Thursday at the Roxbury Barn II. In the weeks that have passed, there has been a growing sentiment that American forces should go into the terrorist countries and literally wipe them off the face of the earth. The devastation lodged upon the U.S. has initiated a resounding cry for the head of Osama Bin Landen and others that have committed similar acts in the past. While I agree that justice should be administered in some form, I do not agree that we should be so quick to try and obliterate any sector of the world that has been confirmed as terrorist. I know that statement will place me in the category of Bill Maher, of "Politically Incorrect", or maybe even Jerry Falwell because those evoking the slightest anti-war sentiment are not viewed as "American". The fact of the matter is a quick and combative response could carry harsh and dire consequences for our military and civilians. More ... In years to come, children will ask their parents, "Were you there?" Thousands will answer, "Yes." Many of those will add, "And so were you. I held you in my arms while we listened and wept and prayed." The pages of this newspaper will be filled with the details of the extraordinary ceremony of mourning and tribute, "Rockaway Reaching Out." It is, therefore, unnecessary for me to do so. Instead, I wish to write of the artists who came; of those who gave flight and pulse and image to the pain and prayers of those gathered. More ... The terrorist attack at the World Trade Center has brought public attention to the fact that dust is an environmental threat. Small particles, called "particulate matter," are generated by the fires, the explosions and the building collapses.
