A Golden Opportunity for Golden Girls by Elio Velez

A Golden Opportunity for Golden Girls by Elio Velez

A new program called the Golden Girls program aims to teach the young girls from Breezy Point to Beach 4th Street. The program, which is created by Carolyne Leigh and Greg Carter, will provide not only the opportunity to play sports but also to learn and practice ideals that they will carry with them in the future.

The program will consist of sports such as softball and lacrosse for girls from the age of 11-13 years old and from the areas of Breezy Point to Beach 4th Street. Carolyne Leigh, who leads the project, says that the project is not just about playing sports. "It’s a multi faceted focus and there’s a lot more criteria of just playing sports." The program is looking for children who do well in school. The program would like to help kids maintain a good academic standing and provide opportunities for tutors if the children needed.

Another part of the focus of the program is parent involvement. Leigh says that parental involvement is a must. Parents should be keeping a close eye on their children’s activities so positive goals can be accomplished. If parents need help, there will be opportunities provided by the program to help parents as best as possible.

The program looks forward to September 29th, which is the first date for registration. Greg Carter of Rockaway Sports Association would like to thank 31st District Leader Robert Simmons and Ed Williams, who represent the office of Congressman Ed Meeks for helping with the project. Sponsors are needed to provide funding for things such as equipment, uniforms and other things. For people looking for more information on the program, call Carolyne Leigh at 718-868-4939 or Coach Greg Carter at 718-327-6998.
