Simon At 1989 Unemployment Hearing:

‘I Taught For the NYC Board of Education’

By The Wave Staff

Despite the fact that candidate Lew Simon has disavowed his earlier statements that he is in fact a licensed teacher, a transcript of a 1989 hearing before the New York State Department of Labor, Unemployment Insurance Referee Section, that has recently come to the attention of The Wave shows that he lied under oath about his teaching background.

The Wave, through independent sources, has verified that the hearing did, in fact, take place and that the transcript in its possession is a true representation of that hearing.

After being sworn, Simon was asked a series of questions by Administrative Law Judge Paul Rosenkranz.

Simon had been turned down for unemployment insurance after the Magen David Yeshiva had failed to renew his contract. The transcript reflects his appeals hearing.

The transcript reads:

"Question: And how long have you been a teacher?

Answer: It would be seventeen years.

Question: And for the first ten years out of the seventeen years, where did you teach?

Answer: I taught for the Board of Education.

Question: Yes, in New York City?

Answer: In New York City."

Shortly after that exchange, Simon was asked by the judge if he had connected his teaching with the religious aspects that were required by the school’s administration.

Simon responded, "I was never asked or told that at any time and if he had ever told that to me, I’d have to ask him to sit down and give me a lesson, because I am state and city licensed to teach English, meaning grades K through 6…"

While the person who provided the transcript to The Wave prefers to remain anonymous, there was a memo attached that read, in part, "There are sections of the transcript that raise questions for me. Is he or has he ever been licensed by the state or the city to perform as a teacher? He states under oath that he has. Has he ever worked for the city’s school system? His statements in this material would indicate that he did. If he is lying, then it is imperative that that he be held accountable for his lies by the voters. They must be presented with the facts, and that is why I am sending you the transcript at this time."

A call to Simon for comment on this story brought an angry denial that it ever happened.
