Dorothy Dunne

Could we ask for a more beautiful weekend to end the summer?? It was just glorious. Festive celebrations were all around us on the west end of this Peninsula. The Breezy Point Mardi Gras, which I watched from the deck of cousins, Patty and Bobby Crowley with their daughter, Nicole, her grandma, Gladys Crowley, Glady’s daughter, Caryn and the Master Grill Chef, husband, Joe Fata and first son, Johnny Crowley; noted golf player, Dotty Dunne and daughters, Dorothy Farrell and other daughter Maureen Dunne, Patty’s Dad, Louis Ritter, sister Karen and oodles of others.

The Mardi Gras was outstanding this year. with fabulous floats fused with creative ideas. Moira Duffy, one of the judges, flew by me in an outfit that was for the birds. (Don’t take offense, Moira. I mean that in a flattering way). She wore a becoming Orange feathered hat touched off with a yellow-feathered bird and matching large orange-feathered handbag that were very becoming and handed me the judge’s list of winners:

Best Band trophy went to the Fire Department Band; 1st place for groups, to the fun simulated cyclone with a cart that rode up and down the track held by baseball players as they marched through the walks; 2nd place group, a huge replica of a Lone Shark; 3rd group winner, Andrew Sisters; 1st place children, Surfer Dudes; 3nd place children, 20’s MTV kids; 3rd place children, Fishing with the Finest; Best single, Cast away; Funniest, Marry Mahon; Friends of Sponge Bob; Correction Department, Pillow Talk; ; Lizzie Grubman; Blue Goose; Sand Monster, most original; Just Desserts, John Mcmanus’s Spirit of Breezy Point, with the cutest little cup cake and a live baby a top the huge cup cake (my favorite); Dr. Wm. McVeigh Memorial, MTV; Joe Stein Memorial, Flip Flippers and Devon Walk won the Best Walk for Rescue on the Rock. This was a most difficult parade to judge. They were all so good and entertaining. They went all out with the music and dancing, costumes and amazing floats that moved swiftly by. What will next year bring?

While waiting for ferry service and better transportation from Breezy Point and New York, there is an express bus (a new larger one) that leaves from 219th Street every morning at 6:30AM on the dot that will transport you to the city in less than 45 minutes. I took it once and it was great. No bus changes or subways or rush hour crowds to contend with. Just hop on and away you go. If you haven’t tried it yet, do so. It is most reasonable, and certainly worth the few dollars. The best and quickest way to the Big City so far. Now, if they only had a bus like this to bring you back from New York to Breezy.

KCB, Joe Kilbride attended his cousin’s very elegant wedding at Forsgate Country Club in Forsgate, New Jersey this past weekend. Sometimes it is nice to have wealthy relatives.

George Angle will be headed for the Island of Curacao in November. This is a colorful Dutch Island with casinos, very different from most Caribbean Islands. Hope you have fun, George.

Cathleen McCormack’s father, Barney Flannegan celebrated his 89th birthday and will be coming home this week after a stay at a rehabilitation facility. She and daughter, Cathy Keane looked just wonderful at the Kennedy’s bard things are going well with them Cathy Sr.’s lighter hair becomes her.

The B.P.S.C. Bocce winners completed their tournaments and it was no surprise Shirley Hanrahan won Ladies Singles and is the Bocce Queen again. At Guys and Dolls, rookie Tracey Gunther and John Hughes whipped Shirley Hanaran and Pat Lynch at a hard fought game with final score of 21 to 19.Oh well. Can’t win ‘em all, Shirley.

Jean and Jim Brady played a super game against Anita and Jack Wilkenson. They beat the Wilkenson’s at Honeymooners 21 to 17. In spite of Jean’s recent illness the winner’s party was held at their cabana with contributing neighbors, Lou Pilar and wife Pat. Therese Bannett and of course Anita and Jack Wilkenson; Dorothy and John Farrell; Tom Triglia; Marge Murray; Jean Ward; Joyce Doll, whose brother is Senator Conklin from Bay Ridge and husband Bruce and Joan Lenihan. All were there to cheer the winners. Jean has been ill for over a month and felling a bit better now, but maybe a few prayers for her would speed her recovery.

At the Palace Hotel Cancun Press Luncheon I learned that casinos are coming to Cancun, and they now house the largest convention center boasting up to 5,000 people at the same time at the Moon Palace; European Spa at Le Meridan; Temazcal, the indigenous steam bath to purify your body is available. Excitement galore at Garrafon which opened the Zip Line…hang with a harness on a 130 meter long cable where you reach speeds up to 30 miles an hour, snorkel through underwater museums to spot anchors and cannons. And, don’t miss Xcaret Park open day and night. See the Prehispanic Ball Game with 6,000 people capacity and a show that will stun you and take you back in time in Mexican History. I highly recommend Xcaret Park to anyone who visits Cancun or Cozumel.
