A Lousy Appearance

A Lousy Appearance

Dear Editor;

My name is M. Greenblatt and a longtime resident of the Rockaways. What I don’t understand and probably won’t in a thousand years, is why did the Parks Dept. tear up the 76th Street basketball court in the middle of the summer? To me that makes no sense but typical of the Parks Dept who seem non-existent as far as maintenance of our parks and boardwalk. They have removed water fountains (Beach 102nd Street) installed fountains that don’t work and painted over storm boards (again on 102nd Street) with huge holes in it. Where do the kids play basketball now? They couldn’t tear it up in April or late September. No – that would have made sense and that’s not like the Parks Dept.! Look around the handball courts and take note of all the garbage lodged in the fences and broken bottles. Don’t tell me about a shortage of help, what about the summer kids program? To me, this is just another example of Rockaway being neglected. Our goal in the warmer months ought to be attracting folks out here but we make a lousy appearance.

MUTAL GREENBLATT
