Prescription Price Gouging

Prescription Price Gouging

Dear Editor;

This week, my mother had a doctor’s appointment, after which her doctor gave her a prescription. She took the prescription to Duane Reade on Beach Channel Drive. When she asked if there was a generic version of the drug, she was told that this was the generic version. She called her doctor’s office to ask if there was another medicine he could prescribe because she would not be able to pay such an exorbitant amount for a prescription.

The doctor’s office seemed quite surprised at the price of the medicine, so they called the Belle Harbor Pharmacy on Beach 129th Street. He was told that the same prescription would be under $100 for the generic. When my mother picked up the medicine, she was told that it came out to $79.00. So, for the same generic drug, Duane Reade was charging 481% more than Belle Harbor Pharmacy. This is price gouging… plain and simple, and it should not be tolerated.

If you are a current customer of Duane Reade, please shop around. There are several smaller, locally owned pharmacies around Rockaway who will be honest and up-front about what they can charge for prescriptions. These businesses care about the people of Rockaway because they are our neighbors. A chain like Duane Reade couldn’t care less about your business.
