On June 30, I was swept away on a rip tide out to sea off Beach 121 Street. I signaled to Eddie, the lifeguard at 121 who immediately called for assistance and plunged into the water accompanied by Ryan, Will and Liam (121, 123 and 125 St.), swimming furiously at amazing speed and with remarkable coordination, they efforts brought me back to shore.
Lt. Figueroa greeted me with concern, warning me about the presence of sharks.
On August 2, a rip tide swept me out to sea for the second time. Eddie was alerted before I waved, arriving, followed by Ryan, Carlos, Chris and Tim carrying two buoys and a lifeline operated by Jim from the shore to assist against a powerfully strong current.
I was returned to shore by shear strength, cooperative teamwork, good judgment, honed skills, motivation and determination on the part of these dedicated young men.
Jim immediately administered oxygen and the attentive Lt. Figueroa was concerned about my vital signs.
In addition to the two rescue missions, Eddie and Ryan have taught me how to determine wave patterns and assume protective postures and movements in the water to prevent being thrown by the active surf.
I want to express my deep gratitude to and great respect for these highly competent and well-trained lifeguards focused on their prevention and rescue activities.
Thank you guys for giving me a sense of security at Rockaway Beach!
