Two Murdered In Separate Incidents By Howard Schwach

In what has been Rockaway’s bloodiest week of the summer to date, two young men were shot and killed in separate incidents.

The first shooting occurred on Tuesday, August 7, during the National Night Out Against Crime.

At about 8:45 p.m., while those ceremonies were taking place on Beach 44 Street, Bobby Thorpe, 23, of Edgemere was shot once in front of 146 Beach 59 Street, at Ocean Village.

According to police reports, Thorpe was visiting Ocean Village when he got into a dispute with four youths who live nearby.

"His major problem was that he was from Edgemere and he was in OV," a neighbor told The Wave.

The four boys chased Thorpe down and shot him once in the leg. He was taken to Peninsula Hospital Center.

According to police records, Thorpe was listed at the hospital as being "stable but uncooperative," meaning that he would not tell police who shot him.

He died at 10 p.m. from his bleeding.

There have been no arrests in connection with the Thorpe homicide, according to police.

The second incident took place on Friday afternoon.

In that incident, a Far Rockaway youth, Frank Carmona, 16, was shot once in the head at 125 Beach 17 Street at approximately 2:00 in the afternoon.

Police sources say that Carmona was arguing with two other teens he believed were responsible for shooting out his car’s windows.

Witnesses to the shooting say that Carmona was threatening the two teens, telling them that he was going to stab them.

The witnesses told police that both the victim and the perpetrators were gang members.

One of the two teens then took out a gun and shot Carmona once in the head.

He died at St. John’s Hospital.

The two teens were arrested in the homicide, but charges are still pending at press time.

They are Eric Simms, 18 and Pablo Sanchez, 17, both of 125 Beach 17 Street. According to police, the weapon used in the homicide was found in the incinerator in that building.

In addition to the two shootings, a Far Rockaway man was shot in the face on Sunday, August 12. The victim was robbed of $40 on Nasby Place, between Ocean Crest Boulevard and Cornaga Avenue. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital where he was treated and said to be in stable condition, according to police.
