Keeping The Faith

Keeping The Faith

We attended a forum this week that featured a few of the City Council candidates from the 31st District of Rockaway. The Arverne Civic Association hosted the forum, and a number of residents came out to meet and question the participants. Although Rev. Henrietta Fullard, James Sanders, Jr., James Blake and David Hooks eloquently addressed many of the issues presented, I was even more impressed with the members of the Arverne Civic Association and community. Each is aware of the seriousness of the upcoming election, and they are able to articulate some of the most complicated issues affecting Rockaway. This is a new breed of voter, one who is driven by an intense love of community and the need for change. They are "old school", but their schools of thought are not old. They are led by the spirits of Malcolm, Medgar, Martin and the Creator. For them, change is possible in their blighted and overlooked area. Courage, faith and the struggles of the past play a major role in the creation of these urban gladiators. On September 11, 2001, the hand pulling that lever will be part of someone that is stronger, conscious and even more determined to enact change in the 31st District.
