Burn Camp In Need

Burn Camp In Need

Dear Editor:

All children are special in there own way. Children are our world’s future. However, some children need a little extra help to feel like they belong. They are just regular kids who, unfortunately, are victims of serious burns.

Luckily, there is a special place for them to go one week every summer. It’s called the children’s burn camp. It is an oasis, funded solely by charitable contributions from people, businesses and organizations that are generous enough to show how much they care.

It is a place where these children can feel comfortable with themselves and others. Lifelong friendships and strong bonds are created here. This incredible haven enables these children to have a summer to remember…a summer where they can be themselves and lose so many inhibitions.

They can enjoy hiking, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts and all the other activities children participate in at summer camp. The camper/counselor ratio is 1 to 1. In addition, their fully staffed medical team, specializing in burns, is on hand at all times/.

After the terrible tragedy on Father’s Day, when three firefighters lost their lives and so many others sustained injuries, we should realize, recognize and appreciate what it is our firefighters risk in order to protect us and those we love. All of our firefighters are on the job because they want to be there. This is a profession they have chosen, regardless of the consequences.

They are extraordinary people who are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice, themselves. When a fire breaks out, first and foremost on their minds is to save the lives of virtual strangers, no matter what the dangers, they are also the same people who donate their hard earned and well deserved vacation time to make a burned child’s summer just a little bit more fun.

There are so many of these caring human beings who are willing to do this. The major problem is we lack the funding to expand the wonderful program. Any of you who have been or know someone who has been a burn victim can understand. Those of you who haven’t can hardly only imagine.

The Fire Safety Director’s Association of Greater N.Y. is sponsoring a golf outing, as they have for the past seven years, on August 24 to raise money for this exceptional charity. We are looking for golfers, hole sponsors, raffle prize donations and raffle ticket buyers. All contributions are 100% tax deductible.

The cost of the golf outing is $130 per person. There will be live entertainment generously donated by one of our local residents, Apryl Green. Some of you may know her from performing with the Rockaway Theatre Company, The Blues Club and our "Night Out Against Crime." If you don’t golf, you can enjoy dinner and cocktails for only $55 per person. A hole sponsorship is $200.

All raffle prizes will be greatly accepted and appreciated. If you are interested in helping support this wonderful cause, please contact Laurie McDonnell as soon possible. Keep in mind that no contribution is ever too small. For more information or for a child’s camp application, please call Laurie at 212-331-5007 or 718-318-6140, leave a message if necessary. All calls will be returned within 24 hours, we need your help…the children need your help.
