Look South For Lifeguards
Look South For Lifeguards
Candidates for public office often make promises they cannot keep and postulate ideas that have little relationship to the real world. Recently, however, Mike Bloomberg came up with an idea that could provide a pool of lifeguards for our beaches next summer. "We should be recruiting in the Southern Hemisphere," the mayoral candidate says. "Countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Australia have winter when we have summer and lifeguards there might be recruited to work." It is a simple idea, but it could work to Rockaway’s advantage. Some issues would have to be worked out. We are sure that the professional lifeguards in those Southern nations earn more than the nine dollars an hour that our lifeguards earn. There is also the question of housing the lifeguards for the three or four months that they are in New York City. Those things, however, can be worked out just as they were for the foreign teachers recruited to work in our schools by the Board of Education. Once in a while, a campaign idea works out. This seems to be one of them.
