Community activist Barbara Morris (West End Realty) and hubby Dennis are on their Alaska Cruise-tour on Holland America’s Volendam to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Following, right on their heels, Geraldine M. Chapey, professor at CUNY and Democratic District Leader, and her spouse, Eugene Pasternak are sailing through Alaska on the Holland America Ryndam on a similar cruise-tour with "Mom," Geraldine D. Chapey, a member of the school board, and John Dolan. Bon Voyage to all. Happy time and safe return. We will hear about their experiences next week on their return.

With age, comes wisdom. Therefore our seniors are, in all probability, among the most intelligent voters our country has today. To deny them their right to vote because there is no place for them to vote is not only unjust, but unconstitutional. We must resolve this problem NOW!

The loud cry I hear from Rockawayites is "WE WANT A POOL AT RIIS PARK" and the response I hear is that there will not be enough funds, after most of the money is spent on necessary renovations. Life is a matter of compromise. If we give a little, we may get back more than anticipated. Why not stipulate that, if we agree to allow the city to use a small portion of the Riis Park parking field to impound cars police confiscate, they, in turn, will agree to use the money raised by this action to erect a much needed Olympic size pool in Riis Park.

The biggest Summertime event sponsored by the Rugby Football Club will take place August 19, near the Rugby Field at Fort Tilden behind the Rockaway Theatre. You may want to be part of this festive fundraiser.

Now that I mentioned the Rockaway Theatre, let me remind you that "Guys and Dolls" is running for its last weekend ….Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon. I have heard rave reviews on this performance and I must get over there to see it myself.

Our beaches used to draw crowds in summertime. However, with the recent ocean tragedies, many are avoiding our surf. And, why not? Only half of our beaches have qualified lifeguards to protect the swimmer. Perhaps these horrible accidents will alert the city for our great need for more lifeguards for next year. Also , let’s hope the city will build bigger and better signs to warn bathers. With all this negativism, Rockaway needs a brighter image. To bring more positive awareness to the residents of New York City and surrounding areas, a 30 second PSA (Public Service Spot) should be made. Our cable and broadcast stations run PSA spots all the time with no charge, (FREE, my favorite four letter word). If Liz Sulik, or any other member of the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce wishes to contact me, I will be happy to show them how this can be done.

Had a delicious dinner at Snug Harbor with Tom Connors last weekend. What I enjoyed the most was their New England, Boston (white) Clam Chowder. It was to die for! Do order it when you go there. Owner, Frank Gallagher told us Christine Jorge has taken an office over his restaurant. Christina Jorge is a candidate for City Council, 32nd Council District. If she is as honest as she claims and is her own person and will bring in some positive results for Rockaway, she might be the gal we need.

Kennedy’s on the Bay is still packing them in this summer. Every Wednesday and weekends they have live music for your entertainment. It is one of our biggest entertainment spots right on the beach with a gorgeous view of New York City night or day.

Bob Zelek is recuperating from a knee operation at South Nassau Hospital. Speedy recovery, Bob. We all wish you well.

Another place I have been hearing a great deal about is Danny’s Chinese restaurant on Cross Bay Blvd. They claim it is the best Chinese food in our area. I know some of you at the B.P.S.C. remember musical entertainer Ernie Barry from Bay Ridge. He has fans who follow him where ever he goes. He is now the featured musician at Danny’s on Friday and Saturday nights. I love Chinese food and I, too, am a fan of Ernie Barry. I am going to try to get over there to catch his act this weekend. I’ll tell you about it next week OR maybe I’ll see you there Saturday night.

I had never been to Harlem, but I finally got there last week…….Famous Sylvia’s Restaurant was the site of a gala celebration for 39 years in business.. A video life documentary of Sylvia and her since deceased husband was played in all the private rooms throughout the evening. Music, open bar and fabulous food flowed freely. Sylvia is known for her homemade fried chicken, which she used to cook herself when she started out 39 years ago. Sylvia’s restaurant has expanded so much she can no longer do that. It is the most famous restaurant in Harlem and they have such a warm and friendly way of greeting you and making you feel at home. The service is so special and so professional it impressed me greatly. "Lillian", I believe is her name was who worked under the tent that was so super special. I said, "Hello" to former Mayor Dinkins, who was there with his attractive wife. They had a fine crowd to enjoy a beautiful evening. The only thing missing was former President Bill Clinton. Where was he???

Baseball All Star, Dave Winefield was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday in Cooperstown and a gala celebration was held at New York’s Cipriani on 42nd St. Winfield has dedicated the last 22years to the David M. Winfield Foundation which has raised millions of dollars on behalf of youth. The proceeds of this event went to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
