Local Lifeguards Compete in Tournament
Six local lifeguards representing Jacob Riis participated in the 17th All-Women Lifeguard Tournament held in Sandy Hook, NJ. For the first time in 17 years, the Rockaways did not host the event.
The Riis lifeguards competed against 27 lifeguard service teams from throughout the country and from provinces in Canada.
The tournament is comprised of events that test for speed, stamina and skill needed in lifeguard work. The events that the lifeguards compete in is running, swimming, paddling a surf-rescue board or surf-ski, and rowing a surfboat.
The Riis Park women lifeguards did a good job in events such as the run relay in which they placed second. In the beach flags race, they finished fourth. The events are held to showcase women’s lifeguarding skills and promote the recruitment of women into the profession.
