Don’t Globalize Problems

Don’t Globalize Problems

To the Editor:

Re: two recent anonymous letters on racism in the Wave. Both of your letter writers had bad experiences. It is unfortunate, but both of them then globalize the incidents. This type of thinking exacerbates racism and other societal problems as well.

Anonymous writer #1 blames Green Bus Lines for a lack of safety deemed to be racist. Question: How did two bus drivers get to be the whole bus company? Here is a suggestion: If bus drivers create unsafe conditions, report them to the bus company. Leave color out of it. All unsafe drivers should be reported.

Anonymous writer #2 blames a whole town for inaction deemed racist. Question: How did two individuals get to be everyone in Broad Channel?

Here is a novel approach for both of them: Recognize that the behavior/actions belong to an individual and not to a town or a company. Then forgive those individuals who do not behave/act as you need or wish.

Complaining anonymously in the newspaper harms all of us and helps no one.
