Failte by James Sullivan

Failte by James Sullivan

The more I read about cloning, genetic testing and stem cell research, the more perplexed I get. It’s a lot to absorb and it raises some perplexing questions. Where are the captains of this new ship taking us and has all this been carefully thought through?

There is no more important issue in my eyes than the sanctity and preservation of human life. Everything else takes a back seat. But what are the repercussions of all of these bold, new scientific advances and inquiries?

I feel that if we can help suffering people with disease like Parkinsons and a host of others, we should at least be examining the possibilities. But where does this all take us- what does the future hold?

Prior to writing this, I was watching CNN news and there was a story about a company that claims it can stop or prevent hurricanes from happening. I thought to myself- Man now wants dominion over the weather as well as human life and diseases etc. Where are we headed?

I believe in scientific advances, God has so gifted men with free choice and intelligence that is the impetus for these discoveries. But how will men use them?

I don’t believe that human embryos, which if not tampered with, contain all the building blocks of a human being, should be killed or experimented upon, to achieve these proposed successes. Human life must remain inviolate.

However, I don’t see any real harm in expanding upon the existing stem cell networks that already exist. The tantalizing possibilities (of eliminating human suffering) are amazing and needed!

But do these scientists of the new world fully understand what they are doing? Has this been carefully examined and thought out??

Or, in a generation or two, after men control the weather and can eliminate or cure various diseases and ills, will they turn their backs on our creator?

Fifty or one hundred years hence will people routinely state "Remember those old fools fifty of one hundred years ago, who were so superstitious and backward that they actually let these imaginary Gods and religions, govern their lives"? We control the weather, we control (or are learning to) control disease; science has proven that these old superstitions are just superstitions and myths?

Where are these new captains taking us??

In my opinion, I’ve seen in my short lifetime, many attacks on Human Life. We started with abortion, then moved on to capital punishment, talk about and entertain euthanasia, and now cloning and stem cell research. Is this a blessing or a curse? Are we aiding and abetting our own destruction?
