Bias On The Buses

Bias On The Buses

Dear Editor,

In response to Mr. Rustow’s letter in last weeks Wave, Amen. I also have been subject to anti-white bias while riding the Green Bus lines from the black female bus driver who made me run half a block to catch my bus ride to work (on mostly white 91 Street). When I stepped on the bus she hit the gas petal causing me to bang my ribs. The same driver stopped in an instant for a black passenger on 69 Street (a mostly African American block) and waited for the person to get safely on before slowly driving off. The black male driver who when I boarded the bus on Mott Avenue at 8:35 one night, looked at me like he wanted to break a bat over my head for riding his bus. Oh, let me not forget this heart warming experience, one night while waiting for the bus in minus 20 degree weather, a mother says out loud "What is taking the bus driver? He is just staring at us!" Her seven-year-old son then said "It must be a white bus driver!" it wasn’t.

Despite The Wave’s liberal stand as of late, I applaud the paper for addressing the issue.
