Leon Locke July 22
A Sunset Picnic Concert featuring rock and roll legend Shirley Austin Reeves, the former lead singer for the Sherelles and The Dimensions will be held at Fort Tilden at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 22.
The special concert in the series sponsored by the Rockaway Music and Arts Council (RMAC) will honor the memory of the former Wave publisher, Leon Locke, who passed away recently.
"Leon loved rock and roll," says Wave managing editor Howard Schwach. "He knew every song, every artist, every lyric."
"Leon would be honored by this tribute to his memory," Schwach added. "For many years the council and the festival were driving forces in his life."
Locke was a founder of the council and a driving force behind its annual Fall Festival, now in its eighteenth year. He served for many years as the festival’s chairperson.
Council president Barbara Eisenstadt urges all those who remembers the era of rock and roll to attend the picnic concert.
"Bring chairs and bring coolers full of food," she urges. "It is going to be a great concert and a great night."
