On the rain date this past Sunday Breezy children learned to surf from Breezy Point volunteer surfing coaches: Bobby Crowley; Richard and Bob Keim; Kevin Welsh; Frank Hardy; John McNamee, Jr.; and others.

A brand new surfboard was raffled off and won by Erin Thorsen. Gift certificates from the Breezy Point Surf Shop were donated as prizes by Breezy Point Lumber A $100 gift certificate was won by Kyle Schreenen while a $50 certificate was won by Nicole Cor.

Michael Kerr received a $25 certificate and other winners of various prizes were: Patrick Calinon, Ian Daly, James Kiernan, Jennifer Keim, Joe Duenan, William Gibbon and Amy King. This annual memorial event for Kevin McNamee and Adrian Foley is becoming more popular each year. Children involved in this event must be Breezy Point residents or have relatives that reside there.

Let the games begin! Actually, they have on the B.P.S.C. Bocce Court. Shirley Hanrahan started the season with a winning women’s doubles game with partner, Mary Pat Orr against Mary Pat Conry and Joan Bioncatto. So far all the new young girls won their women’s doubles. Jim Brady has once again assumed the responsibility of Bocce Game Manager; with the cooperation of Shirley Hanrahan who is in charge of the women’s games.

Breezy Point Cooperative now has a Bocce Court and a team to challenge the B.P.S.C. team. There is one problem. Since 50 people in the Co-op signed up for Bocce, the Co-op will have to build another court. Hurry before the big challenge begins.

Claire and John Hughes are very proud grandparents of granddaughter, Lauren Hughes who graduated with honors this past May and won a 4-year scholarship to the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania.

July 24, Therese Bennett’s mother, Florence Freiss will be honored for her 100th birthday at a party at Therese’s sister, Florence’s home in Lynbrook. A century of love for your 100 years, Florence. She lives alone, walks up and down stairs and has all her faculties. Have a great time!

Caryn and Joe Fata celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on Friday July 13, 2001. Continued happiness and wedded bliss for a loving couple.

Patty ("Hon") Crowley is celebrating her birthday July 19, this Saturday. Patty doesn’t show any signs of age. she just keeps getting younger and younger. It must be from all the fun times she has with hubby, Bobby. Of course her job with Delta Airlines keeps her on the go as well, keeping that slim figure in tact.

Maryann and Brien Mackey and son, Sean, from Rockaway Park are whopping it up in Las Vegas and should be home when this comes out. I’ll give you a report on their good time and, hopefully their big winnings.

The Meeting World was held at the Hilton Towers, NYC. I found Valerie Clarke working the raffles there and had an interesting chat with her. Her grandfather, Pasquale La Ruffa was the shoemaker on 116 Street from the 1920’s to the 1940s. He owned a block of stores there. Valerie was helping out the extraordinary successful trade show for top events and event planners. I told Valerie if she had any old pictures she should turn them into The Wave. We would all like to see them.

Last night at Bridgewaters (South Street Seaport) Australian, New Zealand and South African food and wines were served to help raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. Deborah Brennan was there to give her support for a worthy cause. She is from Beach 128 St in Belle Harbor.

We took a shot of her with MDA victim, the handsome, Michael Patton. It was lovely affair and the auctioned off prizes were magnificent. They even gave free massages by Kurtis and OB from Oasis Day Spa. You can find the spa on the web or look the number up in the book. If you are interested in attending their next MDA event call Deborah or the MDA. You will surely enjoy it.

Ran around the Javitt’s Center last week at the Fancy Food Show and found some terrific new items; such as meringue cookies that contain no fat or calories and just melt in your mouth; new tenderizes and sauces; instant cappuccino; Ostrich meat which is becoming more and more popular than beef because it is healthier even though it is pricier; delicious instant soups that taste as if you cooked them all day and more, more, more. You will read about them in future columns.
