Rockaway Beach Volleyball Heats Up The Summer

By John Sica

This Weeks Scores: Your Mother’s Team 0, Jerry’s Kids 5; Kerry Hills 5 IBK’s 0; TNT 0 Fillmore Ins. 5; Son’s of Beaches 1 Circling Sharks 4; Tap and Grill Island 0 It’s all Good 5; Fisheads 1 Dig This 4; Momomides ER 1 Beach House 4; Psychic Friends 1 Coppersmiths 4; Tap and Grill 2 Beach Club 3; Generation X&Y 5 Federation 0; Jamesons 1 Abbraciementos 4.

Before we talk about this week, let us focus on more important issue’s. The big showdown will occur next week when Coppersmith faces off against reigning champs, Generation X&Y, to see who will be favored to win the division. Coppersmith’s is built around the excellent strong play of Scotty. The force is with him. The experience of Mark Gentile, Joe McManus and Brian Carey have given them an easy run through the Red Division. But their real strength is the flawless play of their girls, who happen to be the sisters of Claire and Marie. Gen X & Y is stronger than last years team with the addition of Bernie O’Conner, Jimmy Mack, and young Michael Sica. The maturity of Trisha more than makes up for the deteriorating skills of her aging father, John. Solid play by the girls, Linda, Carol, and marathoner, Coleen McManus, has led the Gen to the second spot. MVP Rich Whalen and the always reliable play of all around player Brian Sica have made X&Y a dangerous team to repeat.

Meanwhile a big showdown for first in the White Division was totally one sided. Kerry Hills defeated IBK (I wanna Beat Kearns) 5-0 to send a message to the rest of the division and John Brennan, former player for the first place team. The battle for first between these two family oriented teams ended in a one sided victory for the Hills. Led by birthday boy Peter Kearns, great serving by Chris (11 in a row) Walsh, and consistent play by the girls, Della and Michelle Fleming, Noelle Hutton, the Hill took control of the White Division. Kenny Kearn’s blocking display was a deciding factor. Kerry Hills, and the whole league, wishes their best for John Hayes. Get well soon our prayers are with you.

Jerry’s Kids were victorious over Your Mothers Team. Jerry Kid’s wants to remind them that they were once in their shoes. Growing Pains can hurt. Veronica and Matt’s serves were devastating. Their shirts almost turned Red

A show down between the third and fourth place teams in the Red Division, Abbraciamento’s and Jamesons, led to a great match. Although Abbraciemento’s won 4-1 the games and quality of play was even. The athleticism of Jameson’s was not enough to overcome the experience of the "old men and women" of Abbraciementos. The women of Abbraciemtentos want to remind the readers of the Wave that they are young at heart and in many other ways. Mike Buckley, from Jameson’s, succumbed to his Sergeant’s (Rocky’s) command and refused to block his superior, paving the way for Abbraaciemento’s.

Fillmore Insurance whipped TNT 5-0 behind the great play of Peggy Katen. They would like to thank Jimmy "the cheap Bastard" Katen for not showing up. A little less coaching by Laura would improve the team immensely. Please come home Glenn.

Despite the All Good’s Team 5-0 victory, they placed Timothy "The Mailman" Murphy on waivers due to his non-appearence. His fan club did show up though, but this was not enough to deter the coach from making his decision. His contract was picked up by the last place team after the Cirling Sharks refused to pick him up off waivers. They were quoted as saying, "he’s better off retiring."

Claire, (Maries sister), from Coppersmiths, wanted to rub it in at the post game party to the Physic Friends so she invited The Great Kazoo into the backyard of the Rugby Club, only to tell him and Barney how, "we had a really good week, we beat them real bad". Claire wants to remind everybody that she is a nice person, and by the way she is. One of her teammates rushed to her defense and said that what she meant to say was that "she had a really good week of dating," not playing.

For the Jameson’s squad, Keith Green says, "You better show up, drink and have fun or I’m gonna go home next week." Sean O’Talk of Jameson’s whined, "if everyone else played like me, we would have swept them."

Dancer, who is a fine athete in many sports including a being a former high school pitcher, was chosen at a Brooklyn Cyclone game to throw pitch to win possibly a million dollars. He had to throw a ball from 60 feet through a ten foot target. His pitch traveled 40 feet falling merciless to the dirt, embarrassing all of Rockaway.

Gen X&Y had a surprisingly easy time with their rivals, The Federation. The Feds were playing without husband-to-be Greg who has shown what his future will be like. It was nice knowing you Greg. It looks like George’s retirement has ended, it was nice knowing you for five weeks George.

Commissioner Patty Melt has administrative issues:

Those who do not have your rosters in by 7/18 will not be eligible for the playoffs. You know who you are, and next week everyone will know who you are. Any player who is on the roster for one team, playing for another team, will be disqualified from playing on any team in the playoffs. (You know who you are)
