Keeping The Children Safe

Keeping The Children Safe

Dear Editor,

I am asking with an extra please to include this unheard appeal in your next edition of the Wave.

I am a parent and volunteer for Hammels Child Care Center located in the Hammel House Projects.

Ever since Hammels Child Care Center opened in 1963 the Center had paid monthly rent to New York City Housing Authority to run a much needed and used facility. Needless to say there isn’t a playground, or should I state a safe one for the children. There is some ground but nothing for the children to play on. The center lacks permanent furniture like slides and climbing apparatuses for the children to use during playtime.

Instead, occupying precious space and endangering the children is an ancient artifact that was once called Monkey Bars. It consists of metal with no safety features like padding, and over the past years since it was installed it has become outdated not to mention rusted and chipped, containing sharp objects.

The children have been instructed not to use the hazardous space-blocking item due to it causing several injuries in the past and present and will surely cause some in the near and distant future.

The PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) is now reaching in the community for help. A petition is now in circulation for the center to have this item removed from the grounds.

But as always the "powers at be" 1. The Agency for Child Development 2. The New York City Housing Authority, have yet to give the green light. As a parent I deem this as an outrage. We the parents are not even asking them to install the new equipment. We are willing to fundraise and replace it ourselves, but we cannot remove this hazardous item without permission.

We do ask anyone that may have been involved with the center in the past or the present and are even looking to have a child attend in the future, or who just understand our crusade to keep our children safe, write to on our behalf:

Address your letters to "Power at be" or stop by and ask to please sign our petition.
