Remember Rabbi Scholar

Remember Rabbi Scholar

Dear Editor:

On Friday evening, July 29, Rabbi Michael Scholar, the rabbi of Temple Israel on Beach 84 Street, suffered a coronary and passed away.

On Sunday afternoon, the funeral services were held in Borough Park, with hundreds of people attending to remember the late, great rabbi.

The most moving of the speeches were those of the rabbi’s grandchildren. Rabbi Scholar was one of the most loving and giving rabbis. He was always making sure that nobody went hungry, delivering Care packages to the needy.

On Wednesday afternoon, the rabbi called me to ask if there were a way to raise more money because the shul was once again in danger of closing. My heart went out to the rabbi and to the shul. With the passing of this fine mensch, who educated so many Jewish children for over 50 years, we must remember to say thank you.

We are urging all people, whether you are Jewish or Gentile, White or Black or Hispanic, to please step up to the plate. Send a donation in memory of the rabbi to Temple Israel, 445 Beach 84 Street, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693.

My deepest sympathy goes to Rebbetzen Harriet Scholar and her family in this time of loss. To the members of the congregation, we must all work together to keep the doors of the shul open.

Lew M. Simon
