Spitzer to Stabile: Talk To Pataki!

Spitzer to Stabile: Talk To Pataki!

By Howard Schwach

State Attorney General Elliott Spitzer has turned a deaf ear to City Councilman Al Stabile’s call for a Special Prosecutor to look at the various allegations that have been made against him in the past few weeks.

"We don’t have the power to appoint a special prosecutor," a spokesperson for Spitzer told The Wave recently. "Only the governor has the right to appoint a person to such a position."

Stabile called for the special prosecutor through his lawyer, Scott Baron, in the hope that the prosecutor’s investigation would "Stop the political lynching" of Stabile "before it ruins a man’s life."

Baron said that the prosecutor would "suffocate the origin of the rumor and innuendo."

Stabile is under investigation by the Queens DA for allegations that he misused money belonging to the Ozone-Howard Little League, where he was the long-time president and treasurer. He is also under investigation for attempting to transfer a piece of land owned by the city and leased to the little league to a private businessman in return for forgiving debt owed the businessman by the league. Finally, he is under investigation for utilizing campaign funds to pay for a portion of his daughter’s wedding party, a violation of state law.

Stabile has not publicly commented on the charges and his lawyer remains unavailable for comment.
