RLL’s United Effort Pays Off Big

RLL’s United Effort Pays Off Big

By Stu Spolin

The Rockaway Little League is proud to announce field #4 is operational. It takes true grit and determination to take on a task so enormous. Volunteers, that’s who they are; fathers with children in little league.

Thanks to their tireless, painstaking efforts we now have four incredibly beautiful fields. Though mostly unnoticed by the community at large, a great sense of gratitude is dully noted for these few good men.

Their commitment, determination and resolve, should not go unnoticed and I on behalf of the Rockaway community would like to thank Tom Boggiano who, besides driving his son and daughters hundreds of miles weekly to various athletic activities they participate in statewide, is the fields coordinating supervisor.

Tom Boland is thanked for his backbreaking and unrelenting commitment in getting fields 1, 3 and 4 in immaculate shape. Also, many thanks go Tom Boggiano and Tom Boland’s brothers in law Jim Cashin and Steve Paskoff for picking up shovels and digging and digging.

Hey, what’s family for if you all don’t share the load? By the way, thanks is due also for answering the phone even though you knew it meant hard labor. Special thanks to Paul Mastros and Kenny Smith for their commitment in putting field #2 in proper playing order.

These people didn’t have to get involved but choose to for the safety of their own children as well as ours. These people (volunteers) are true heroes and champions in my eyes. As the adage goes, "It’s easier to say than do."

Tom Iandolla and his crew deserve special thanks. Tom Iandolla, a professional sprinkler installer and landscaper by trade, toiled with his crew for many long, hard hours that without his expertise and dedication, this extensive project never have been accomplished so skillfully. What makes this feat even more selfless is the fact that he doesn’t even have a child, in our league.

His heart went out to each and every one of you because he believed in our ideas and principles: beautifully groomed fields that will be everlasting for thousands of children to play on for years to come.

Like in the movie Field of Dreams, if you build it, they will come. They, in this instance, are our precious children, whose summers begin and end with the dreams of being their favorite ballplayers on our very fine fields.

Also we would like to thank Marty Anderson, Rick Ershman and the Board of Directors, for financing the fields much needed repairs and investing in our children’s safety and healthy avenue of play.

Hey, Rockaway I think we all have caught baseball fever with our new fields. Once again a special thanks and three cheers for all the named and unnamed volunteers who’ve made this all possible.

The community is indebted to you all. Have a belated (the Sports Editor is to blame for the "belated") Happy Father’s Day guys. We applaud your gracious undertaking and appreciate all your self-sacrifice and effort. Thanks. Now let’s play ball!
