PS 183 Teacher

By Howard Schwach

An angry parent was arrested last week for an assault on a PS 183 teacher who had left the Wall Street world to teach at the school this year.

According to police sources, Yvonne Calloway, 30 of Rockaway Beach allegedly attacked novice teacher Lynette Gandy in the schoolyard during a dance performance. The attack took place in front of hundreds of young students who were participating in the program.

Gallaway confronted Gandy, demanding to speak with her about an incident that took place the previous week.

According to sources, that incident occurred when Gandy went to the assistance of a special ed teacher who was having a problem with Gallaway’s daughter. When Gandy attempted to take the 9-year-old to the principal’s office, the daughter allegedly kicked and punched the teacher.

Eyewitnesses say that Callaway confronted Gandy in the school yard during the dance performance, yelling at her for taking her daughter to the office.

Gandy told the parent that it was not the appropriate time to discuss the incident because she had to supervise the kids at the dance. When Gandy turned away from the parent, Callaway allegedly hit her on the back of the head with a metal object.

Bleeding heavily, the teacher became dizzy and collapsed as horrified kids fled the scene.

Gandy was treated at Peninsula Hospital Center and released.

"This parent was apparently looking for the teacher, believing that she had done something do her child," said a United Federation of Teacher’s spokesperson. "There has to be zero tolerance for this kind of attack."

Police charged Callaway with second degree assault and second degree harassment.

Under a new state law that addressed school violence, Callaway is more likely to face a jail sentence than in the past.
