Probe of Stabile Spreads

Probe of Stabile Spreads

To City, State, Fed Agencies

By Howard Schwach

The probe of City Councilman Al Stabile is spreading like wildfire, with the Queens DA, federal prosecutors and a city council ethics committee all joining in, according to law enforcement sources.

The most recent move was by the city council’s ethics committee, which announced on Thursday that they would probe two allegations about the time-limited councilman, who represents both Rockaway and Broad Channel.

The probe was ordered by Peter Vallone, the council’s speaker.

There are two separate allegations involving stabile’s handling of money. The first is an allegation that he mishandled funds belonging to the Ozone-Howard Little League, an organization that Stabile led for many years. There is another allegation involved with the little league as well, that Stabile attempted to trade public land leased to the league for a reduction of money owed to the company that had fenced in the land for the league. The company involved was then to turn the land into a parking lot and give some of the proceeds back to the little league.

The other allegation against Stabile is that he ran several fundraisers at Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach and then overpaid the catering hall for those fundraisers with his campaign funds and then attempted to apply the overpayment to the fee charged for his daughter’s wedding, held at the same location.

Both converting public land to private use and misusing campaign funds is against the law.

Stabile’s office is refusing to comment on the allegations, referring callers to his lawyer, Scott Baron. Calls to the lawyer’s office either go unanswered or are met with a "no comment at this time."
