Failte by James Conway Sullivan

Failte by James Conway Sullivan

The election results from Northern Ireland are in and there’s good news and bad news. The elections were for seats in the British Parliament. You see, since Northern Ireland is an occupied colony of Britain, it has been absorbed into Britain and elects members to British parliament. But that’s another story, or at least a few articles.

The elections show the largest Catholic (or Nationalist-Republican) party in Northern Ireland is Sinn Fein—the legal political arm of the Irish/Republican Army--IRA. The bad news is that the more moderate Protestant party headed by David Trimble lost votes and a seat or two to extremist Protestants, headed by Dr. (of hate) Ian Paisley.

David Trimble risked his political fortunes on the election and lost—not big, but a loss! This leaves Paisley and his bigots, who opposed the modest peace accords, drunk with power!

At the same time, Sinn Fein, who challenged the SDLP’s title as the leading Catholic party, also picked up two seats in parliament for a total of four seats.

Reports had mud being thrown at Mr. and Mrs. Trimble, leaving the results election night by extremist Protestants. Trimble, although sometimes bigoted and incoherent, was at least willing to attempt compromise with the Nationalist/Catholic minority (soon to be majority). Paisley is simply an anti-Catholic bigot and hatemonger whose slogan is "No Surrender."

No Surrender to equal rights for Catholics, to an end to British occupation, to basic human rights and fairness! He seeks to end or "modify" the hard fought and agreed peace accord. He seeks to turn the clock back!!! This, of course, would mean a return to war!!!

Catholics and Nationalists will not return to internment without trial, torture, murder, and second class citizenship in their own land! May God help the poor people of its former (still) British colony! Many of us sought peace and electoral means as an alternative to the bomb and the bullet.

So let God now help the beleaguered land, where justice and equal rights are still only nice words. The British and their Unionist cronies are doing all they can to wreck the peace accords.

Our day will come!!!
