Arrest Made In School Sex Attack
By Gary G. Toms
An arrest has been made in the sexual assault case that took place at PS 47, located in Broad Channel, on May 25, 2001. Police have taken an 11-year old boy into custody and charged him with sexual assault against a 10-year old girl. No official charges have been filed against another boy who is said to have been involved in the incident, but he has been placed on suspension.
According to eyewitness reports, a written statement provided by the victim, and from official police sources, the young girl was allegedly taunted and groped a number of times by the two young boys, in full view of students in an all-purpose room at approximately 8:30 a.m. It is alleged that the boys repeatedly touched the girl’s buttock and breast area as she pleaded with them to stop. Students say that the boys went as far as to try and pull her behind a folded lunch table in effort to continue their assault.
Although an arrest has been made, the girl’s parents are still outraged over the incident. "I find it amazing that no one at the school bothered to contact the police, or us, for the entire day", states the girl’s father. "The police didn’t become involved until my wife and I went to our local precinct to file a report. I’m also angry at the fact that my daughter asked a teacher to help her, but she simply ignored what was happening and did not want to get involved."
The parents have been working very closely with the Office of Special Investigations, which is headed by Ed Stancik. "They have assured us that everything will be done to reprimand all those responsible for allowing this to happen", states the girl’s father.
Efforts were made to speak with school representatives from P.S. 47 and the District 27 Superintendent’s office, but both declined to comment on the incident.
