Fourth Grade Reading Scores

Fourth Grade Reading Scores

Up in Most Rockaway Schools

By Howard Schwach

There are ten elementary schools in Rockaway, many among the lowest performing schools in the city. A number of them are on the Schools Under Register Review (SURR) list and others are on the verge of going on that list. For the first time in years, however, there is a glimmer of hope in the Fourth Grade reading scores that were recently released by the New York City Board of Education.

Of the ten elementary schools in Rockaway, seven increased the number of students meeting the new standard of achievement, one remained the same and the remaining two went down slightly.

PS 114 in Belle Harbor has been the highest performing school in Rockaway for many years. In the latest round of reading tests, it increased its percentage by five percent, moving to 88 percent from 83 percent.

PS 225 in Rockaway Park raised its percentage by the highest number, a full ten percent (to 24 percent from 14 percent).

Other schools that raised the percentage of students meeting the reading standard were: PS 43(up nine percent to 35 from 26), PS 47 (up one percent to 61 from 60), PS 104 (up four percent to 31 from 22), PS 106 (up six percent to 54 from 48) and PS 183 (up two percent to 30 from 28).

The two schools in which the percentage of students meeting standards fell were PS 197 (down nine to 24 from 35) and PS 215 (down four from 28 to 24).

The scores from the Eighth Grade tests are due in the schools within the next few weeks.
