The Army, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, National Guard and all the members of our Armed Services who fought and continue to fight our wars against the enemies of our nation and the cruelties of humanity throughout the world.

Where would we be without our men of principle, courage and valor? How would our country have survived without their great sacrifices, their extraordinary fearlessness, and heroic deeds?

Have the Jews forgotten the holocaust? Does a woman forget a rape? Does a child or battered wife forget years of beatings and abuse? Neither does a man or woman on the battlefield forget the ravages and horrors of war. If they survive, they move on with their lives, some better than others, but the scars always remain. No surgeon can remove them. How, then can we forget our service men and women who did our fighting for us and many who laid down their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom of living in dignity in the greatest country in the world….Our United States of America.

Take a deep breath of fresh air; feel the warmth and brilliance of the sun; romanticize in the glow of the full moon; gaze at the glistening stars; smell the beautiful scent of roses and flowers around us, plant your tree of the future and as you do these things thank God for our heroes who made it possible for us to enjoy the life and happiness we share today.

Pray for those who did so much for us. And, ask yourself, " Would I have had the courage to lay down my life for them and the greater cause? How many could say, "Yes"?

Make Memorial Day a memorable day in prayer for those who gave so much. And, be forever thankful for our men and women who served in our behalf.

While on the subject of service members….would they have been able to accomplish such high goals; yet have the courage, the integrity, the principles, devotion and honor to their country without the intensive training received in each branch of service? I am sure you agree, they could not. ADOPT THESE PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS! DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE!

"Allow me to reiterate what I mentioned in a previous column. Our children are in dire need of Discipline! Discipline! Discipline! Forget about pampering our children. Love them. Yes, but let’s not "cow-tow" to their whims and wishes, to their every desire and allow them to run through life without reins. We have had enough of leniency and it failed. Failed us and them miserably. Call it "Old Fashioned." Who cares? There is no common courtesy today, no discreet, civil language, only shocking expletives that comes from their mouths. And, respect! What has happened to respect? We are raising monsters with no compassion or feelings for the rights of others. They would just as soon shoot you for a leather jacket, a ring or for the thrill of shooting someone. When is it going to stop?

NOT UNTIL OUR YOUTH RECEIVE PROPER TRAINING….. the training that builds strong character, the training that keeps a man honest. The training that instills integrity into souls. Give our children the training we give our service people. If it works for them why wouldn’t it work for our youngsters? I challenge our schools to get a program such as this going. We will then start to build the greatest citizens of any nation.

The Furniture Show is in town at the Javits Center. You, however, don’t have to go that far. There is a new furniture store that just opened in Arvern at 359 Beach 79th Street called I&I Distributor, Inc. They have beautiful genuine leather sofas and chairs in all colors; cocktail tables etc. all made in Italy, Germany and Brussels for WHOLESALE prices. I saw pictures of their line and they are exquisite. Check it out.

Stopped by the RAA photography show by John J. Grillo called Near and Far. Beautiful, thought provoking photos taken in Costa Rica, Italy and Far Rockaway adorn the gallery at Fort Tilden with his works .They are well worth seeing and I highly recommend you to view them. They will only be there until June 10th.

Next door is the Rockaway Theatre where I found George Hoffer, April Green and Joe Conizio working like beavers on the theater’s renovation to be completed in time for the season’s opening performance of "Neil Simon’s "Come Blow Your Horn." There will be a Champagne reception to follow the performance in the Chapel a few feet away. And., if you are lucky, you may meet the invited guest for that evening, Neil Simon himself. That is all happening on Saturday, June 2nd. Hurry….space is limited.

Another exhibition you should not miss is at the Guggenheim Museum, NYC where you will see the magnificent works of the brilliant architect, Frank Gehry. He is truly a man of extraordinary talent. You will just be in awe of the new Guggenheim Museum to be built in the Wall Street area on the water….next to the South Street Seaport. It will be another eye stopper for all the world to see as they enter New York Harbor. What the Opera House is to Australia, this Wall Street Guggenheim Museum will be to America. You simply must go see the model of it at Guggenheim at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue. And, of course, see the other great architectural marvels Frank Gehry created.

City Harvest held their annual wine and food tasting fundraiser at Bridgewaters, South Street Seaport. It was fantabulous (if there is such a word). There wasn’t a dish or glass of wine I did not like. Great, great, great! This is another must event for you. And, while you are having such an outstanding edible experience you are contributing to City Harvest which helps feed the hungry around the city. A worthwhile evening for a worthwhile cause. Chef of well-known Daniels Restaurant, Daniel Boulud posed with me after his informative food demonstration and seminar.

Diamonds not only are a Girl’s Best Friend as Marilyn Monroe sang, but they are ooh! ooh! so beautiful, especially when you look around Harry Winston’s Fifth Avenue shop. The sparkle from their jewels almost blinds you. Most people wear fakes today. But not at Winston’s, and they look so good when they are REAL. At their cocktail reception they took me on a tour upstairs where the jewelers do their "in-house" work. Unfortunately their designer had just left, but what he left behind were his creations of beautiful baubles beyond compare. When you are looking for something really special and I mean really special, Harry Winston jewels are the best. There was one necklace with tiny diamonds and jewels that was just heavenly to cast your eyes upon.

Remember the Muppets and Miss Piggy? Well, creator Jim Hensen, who passed on a few short years ago, left behind scraps of his doodles and designs that can now be seen by everybody in a new book by Alison Inches called Designs and Doodles. It is a marvelous book for children as well as adults. And, it is now on the stands and in bookstores.
