Hope all you mothers, grandmothers and surrogate mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day. It certainly was a beautiful day weather-wise. Helene Danzilo came close to a double celebration with her birthday falling on Saturday, May 12. Congratulations, Helene. Next year she’ll hit it right on target, on Mother’s Day. Her daughter, Maria, granddaughter, Hollis, and daddy were all with her to share the day. Her husband, Peter, recovering nicely from Lymphoma and still receiving day care treatment, was home with her also. Their daughter, Lainnie, is living in Virginia and daughter, Christine resides in California. Perhaps next year they will all be with her for a "double her pleasure" day. I was happy to be with my grandchildren by my son, Jimmy Matuozzi and their mommy, Bettyann in Island Park. And, what can I tell you? They are smart, outgoing and so adorable. What do you expect a grandma to say? Only I say it because it is true.

All you Seniors, polish your crutches and rev up you motor scooters and get to the Sugar Bowl this Friday, May 18 for the summer season opening of the Sugar Bowl. Mr. "Glib" will be tending bar to add to your day’s chuckles. and you can look forward to fun, fun, fun Fridays for the rest of the coming sunny, summer days.

Sad to hear Al Martin of Utica Walk passed away this last week. He was ailing for several years and very ill in Peninsula Hospital for months. Through the years he has been in and out of hospitals but has now found his peace. My condolences to his family and friends.

I must mention, also, my sadness upon hearing the demise of Perry Como. In my Gleason Days I appeared several times on his show and I just loved the way he sang with such ease. I am sure many of you remember him and his entertaining shows. As they say today," He was cool". Condolences to his family and friends and fans.

Don’t forget the Opening Night of "Come Blow Your Horn," a Neil Simon Production by the Rockaway Theatre Company, Rockaway Theatre and Arts Council at the Post Theatre in Fort Tilden. There will be a Champagne Celebration following at the Fort Tilden Chapel. Come and meet INVITED GUEST, NEIL SIMON. RESERVATIONS LIMITED. TICKETS $25

Ran into a former Belle Harbor resident, Sylvia Busch on the city bus. She now has (6) grandchildren by her children: Robert, an endocrinologist; Ronald buys and manages Gabby Shoes and daughter, Linda Shlofmitz is married to a doctor who performs extensive angioplasty at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. Sylvia still loves and misses Rockaway and hopes some of you remember her children who grew up in Belle Harbor...

Are you forever blowing bubbles, or wish you were? Well, if you aren’t maybe your kids are. Any child 12 and under can go to the nearest Wal-Mart Store across the country and enter the National Biggest Bubble Contest, Saturday, May 26 at 11AM and have a chance to win $10,000 in savings bonds and present a $5000 donation to the Children’s Miracle Network. They have an official Bubble Meter to measure who blows the biggest bubble.

Except for my TV viewers, it was too late to let you know, (but maybe some of you watched anyway), the Esteemed Woman’s Foundation’s "I’m My Mother’s Daughter" documentary aired last Friday night at 8PM on the Lifetime Channel. It was a mother chef to daughter chef reception. Zarela Martinez and her daughter, Marissa Sanchez, chefs were there among others. Meredith Vierra, from the VIEW, was the Mistress of Ceremonies and Paula Poundstone and Sherry Goffin Kondor performed. Following the premier screening awards were given to the outstanding women of our times presented by their daughters. It was a beautiful evening held at the Equitable Center.

JOB (Just One Break) held their annual awards luncheon at the Grand Hyatt. Maurice Debois was the emcee of a very moving afternoon. Awards went to the handicapped who achieved excellence in their "handicapable" jobs. The message, of course, was to encourage corporations and employers to hire more handicapable men and women. Think about these men and women the next time you need to hire help.

Springtime in New York at the Tavern on the Green couldn’t be nicer……especially if you attended the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation fundraiser to advance the treatment and cure of Thalassemia and to enhance the life of the patients. Their aim also is to educate the medical profession and the public about Cooley’s anemia. It was a gorgeous evening with an indoor and outdoor reception followed by a delicious dinner hosted by Chaz and Gianna Palmintieri. Governor George Pataki spoke as did Mayor Rudy Giuliani and National Board Chairman, Frank Somma. A Gala to remember and hopefully a cause you will remember as well. They need your help. Next year try to make it. A silent and live auction took place. Bob Zelek should have been there. A $7,500 value trip for two aboard The Royal Scotsman Train including airfare to London was auctioned off. A good deal!

The Norwegian Sea was in New York port and hosted a few travel agents for lunch and tour. It is a beautiful ship and I must say, the food was superior. The sea bass melted in your mouth. Cruise passengers won’t be disappointed sailing on this vessel which cruises to New England and Canada and the Caribbean.

Nestled next to the skyscrapers of the city is a small, new hotel called The Library on Madison Avenue and 41st Street that has a charming Penthouse venue, perfect for small weddings and meetings. Innovative Events, a catering company that not only prepares the food but decorates the area with floral arrangements, a bar and other amenities to enhance a party, invited meeting planners to display their expertise. They certainly do a marvelous job. I must say if you are planning a small party in the city for 250 people or less, keep the Library Hotel and Innovative Events in mind.
