Kentucky Derby Day brought together several member of the B.P.S.C. for their annual reunion at Kennedy’s on the Bay : Shirley Hanrahan, who recently underwent minor surgery with successful results; Jean and Jim Brady, former owners of a race horse, themselves recently returned from their Florida winter condo; Claire Hughes, who has been nursing a broken shoulder through the winter with hubby, John Hughes; Tom Triglia, the Co-Chair of the annual Surf Club shows for many years and, I am sure there were others who arrived after I left.
A few of them, I believe, stopped into St. Thomas More Church Saturday afternoon to catch a glimpse of Nancy and Tom Mulligan’s son, Perter’s elaborate and elegant wedding
( Tom Mulligan is and has been the manager of the B.P.S.C. for at least over forty years, as long as I remember). Congratulations, Peter and best wishes for a beautiful, loving and long lasting marriage.
Some ladies were at the bar to enjoy the Kentucky Derby and the gab of the KCBs ( Kennedy;s Corner Bachelors) OR, if you prefer, (Kennedy’s Crime Busters) . They were: Noreen Maloney, Pat Gilhooley and Ann Marie Young. Bob Zelek nursed a libation as he pondered his next trip to Scotland…………five days on the Royal Scotsman’s train, ( on the par with the Orient Express) where he will receive regal treatment. This is not an inexpensive trip, folks. Not as much as a trip to space, but one that is certainly out of this world. And,. why not enjoy a once in your life time experience such as this.? Of course his final decision has not been made, but it certainly is nice to contemplate.
Bob O’Brien, also at the bar, was boasting about his granddaughter, Alexis O’Connor ,five and a half, who threw the softball that helped win the game at Fort Tilden for her Rockaway Knights of Columbus softball team . Has she inherited the athletic abilities of Grandpa who was an Olympic oarsman in his youth? Alexis is his daughter, Christine’s child and Alexis said she did it in honor of her one year old brother, Aimen.
Mary and Jim Gildea, summer residents of Breezy Point for many , many years are renovating their house on Roosevelt Walk to become year round residents. They love the cold weather and with that in mind they should be very happy year as round residents in Breezy.
You meet the most interesting people at the Studio "J" salon….Pat Smith who has lived in Rockaway for years and years and is married to Jack Smith but resides now in Florida was being coifed while I was having my nails done. She was full of anticipation for her grandson , Jake’s First Holy Communion at St. Francis de Sales and the party following. I also learned that my hair stylist, Gary’s grandson, Paul Maracina (26), an airline pilot for United Airlines transported Al Gore recently. And. Gals! He is unmarried and available. You can always book Gary for your next "Do" and maybe you’ll get a chance to get to know this handsome guy.. Julia Perpinka from Far Rockaway and Eileen O’Shea, a court reporter from Jamaica and regular customer. Maxime
It is unbelievable to think Rockway will not have enough Lifeguards to protect our swimmers this summer. What are our politicians doing?. Evidently not enough to call attention to the needs of this Peninsula during it’s peak season. Thank God the Breezy Point Co-op has successfully handled this matter. Perhaps Rockaway should have a special committee to handle this problem and to start NOW to make sure we have enough lifeguards for the year 2002.. Absolutely disgraceful ! Seems we really are an appendage of this city that has been forgotten. Are we just an "Also"?
Found some Breezy Pointers at the Long Island Wine and Food Tasting event for the benefit of Gilda’s Club to support cancer victims at the Windows on the World. Pictured here are: Marguerite and Charlie Hughes and Marguerite’s sister and brother-in-law, Catherine(Kathy) and Michael Ferri. This is a great event for all Long Islanders and everyone. It gives you an opportunity to learn and taste the wonderful wines of Long Island and the best restaurants in the various areas. Try to attend next year. You’ll have a fabulous feast of a time. For escargot lovers the Coeur des Vignes French Restaurant on Main Rd. in Southold , NY; Oriental, Sushi at Aldo’s in Greenport, L.I. No room to mention so many , but, be assured they were all outstanding.
AIM 2001 Expo was held at the Javits Center and it was just amazing how the software industry has improved our way of doing business. In a split second you have your information. In a split second you can reach any file you want. Awards were given out to Randall J. Miller ,Sr. Engineer and Sergio Herendez , Exec. V.P. of the Third WAVE in L.A. and Karen Kunditz, assistant City Clerk of City of Carlsbad, Ca.
Costa Cruise Lines introduced the travel agents to it’s brand new ship, Atlantica with a tour and lunch aboard while it was docked in the New York Harbor. It is soooooooooo Italian! From aft to stern you feel as if you are in Italy. And, I must say, they cook a perfect al dente’ pasta, one of the five courses served at lunch. It is a beautiful ship decorated in heavy woods and art works from famous Italian artists. A much smaller ship than the mega wonders they build today. For some reason or other I like the smaller ships. It gives you a chance to get to know the passengers a little better and these ships are small enough to dock at the ports of call. You don’t have to board a tender to tour them. And, of course the fact that the Atlantica is and Italian ship you get complimentary wine with your meals. This ship sails Mediterranean Sea , Baltics , Greek Isles.and Caribbean.
