Rockaway Little League Begins Season

Rockaway Little League Begins Season

With a huge influx of children this year, the total roster of Rockaway Little League has grown to over nine hundred kids.

Rockaway Little League now has ten tee-ball teams (20 or more players each), 15 peewee teams (15 or more players), 11 minor boys teams (15 or more players), 7 minor girls teams (16 or more players), 4 junior boys teams (16 or more players), 9 major boys teams (15 or more players) and 4 major girls teams (15 or more players). The leagues are for players age 5 to 15.

To get this influx of players organized and in place for the season openers, it took a tremendous amount of work on behalf of Marty Andresen and his many hard-working and dedicated volunteers. They really worked hard to get coaches, uniforms, schedules and fields ready. Rockawayites should thank those who wolunteer their time freely to make Rockaway Little League as good as it has become.

It was a beautiful Saturday and a gorgeous day for playing ball. "Play Ball!" was heard on field 3 for girls minor softball.

The game between Quadrozzi and Frank’s Carpentry started at 1:15 p.m.

Quadrozzi scored first in the top of the first inning on singles by Tiffanie Carman, Milagros Clark, Christina Salinas and Ashley Archiveleaue. Frank’s played tough until the top of the fourth when Quadrozzi scored five times on a walk to Casey Hila, singles by Genieve Prigge, Kelly Carman, Megan Boyle and a bases clearing 3 run homerun by Tiffanie Carman.

Quadrozzi’s number one pitcher Genieve Prigge was removed after the fourth inning after holding Frank’s to one hit. She was replaced by first-time pitcher Marie Sanz. Quadrozzi scored twice more in the top of the sixth on walks by Hila, Clark and Sanz, and single by Prigge and T. Carman. This gave them a strong 8 to 0 lead.

Frank’s wasn’t through though and they gave Quadrozzi quite a scare. In the bottom of the sixth they got a single, a walk, two errors and a run. Now they had bases loaded and nobody out. Maria Sanz held her own though and got the next three hitters to hit three straight dribblers back to her.

Both teams played a great and competitive game but the game ball went to T. Carman of Quadrozzi.

In another Rockaway Little League game Cross Country Federal won their opener. Their opponent was Flynn & Flynn Attorneys at Law.

Strong pitching by Danielle Stathis, Kerry King and Nora Marley helped give the girls in white their first win. The hits came from everywhere including Stathis, Lauren Atwood, Marley, Michelle Kenel, King, Brianne Carroll and Brianna Maroney.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when the girls in white (Cross Country Federal) got on the board in a big way. Maroney, Stathis, Atwood, Marley, Kenel, Devin Nusger, Daisy Diehorn, King and Michelle Cashin started a rally that was hard to stop.

The fourth inning rally displayed the hitting talents of Diehorn, Carroll, Maggie Kimball, Lauren Spadaro and Casey McCormack.

Roxanne Libretti played a great defensive game.

Great pitching from Meghan Wheeler and Kristie Grassito on behalf of Flynn & Flynn and great fielding by Liberty Calakos made for a great game.

Rockaway Little League is in full swing and all fans and parents are invited to come down and cheer for our local competitors.
