Youth Seize Employment Opportunity

Youth Seize Employment Opportunity

By Aaron Zeidman

On Monday, April 30, 2001, some 126 youth turned out to enroll in RDRC’s Summer Youth Employment Program.

J. Shanu, Director of Youth Programs for RDRC, considers this to be an indication of another successful year for the program, which is currently in its twelfth year.

"I support the Summer Youth Employment Program because it is an excellent program designed to offer youth not only the opportunity to work but to develop good work ethics. Working with organizations will aid youth to build character and instill unshakable spirit.... preparing them to become future business and community leaders," said Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings, whose organization is one of the employers for the program.

Daphne White, Site Coordinator of the Far Rockaway branch of AIDS Center of Queens County, another program employer, said "We are getting involved...and are happy to be involved. We are giving the young people a chance to participate in a professional work environment so they can learn important life skills. Our involvement also allows us to extend and expand our contribution to the well-being of the community."

Enrollment will continue every Monday at 3:00 p.m. until May 21, at JHS 198 Reverend Mason Community Center auditorium, only for those who have already submitted applications to RDRC and have received either a phone call or notification in the mail from the NYC Department of Employment.

Positions are still available and applications are still being accepted at the RDRC office. Contact RDRC for more information.
