Whatever it takes. If we want this new ferry service from Manhattan to survive all Rockaway residents must join together and fight! Protest! Bombard Giuliani’s office to help subsidize this very much needed means of transportation to the Peninsula….As I have said all along, "If Staten Island can have a subsidized (FREE) ferry why not Rockaway"?…Not that we are asking for FREE service (though we wouldn’t turn it down) We are willing to pay what it takes for the bus and train, maybe even a quarter more. The time is NOW!….Especially since the A train is dysfunctional from Broad Channel to Rockaway Beach. What inconveniences these Rockaway commuters have to go through by being shuttled by buses, climb those stairs to the El at Rockaway Blvd. If you are handicapped, disabled in any way, forget about it. You could drop dead on that staircase trying to get to the train. Even to bus to Flatbush Avenue and then hop on the train at the Junction is a hassle. AND, the length of time it takes to get to Manhattan……..sometimes as much as two hours. Two hours for a trip that by car takes only 35 minutes. This is outrageous! What are we to do? Thank God for Anthony Weiner who at least got Gateway Park to build the dock at the old Coast Guard Station in Rockaway Point to make the ferry possible. Now, he needs to fight for us more with our backing. I say write letters or even ask the WAVE to print a form we could all sign and e-mail or snail mail them out to all our politicians and the Port authority since they are the ones responsible. (I am sure Giuliani will be very cooperative in pushing the Port Authority to share the burden. Look how he showed them up during our snowstorms this winter. The poor snow removal by the Port authority at the airports caused all those flight delays at the expense of travelers). Go to the networks, get Channel 7 ON OUR SIDE, rally, create a lot of publicity. I will do my share on my channels, Monday through Friday. Why do they claim the ferry is not for commuters, only for tourists? How discriminating can they be? The residents of Rockaway should not be denied commuter ferry service at a nominal rate when it is readily available for them? This is not fair to the people in Rockaway. We are another borough of New York City and deserve to have a faster, more pleasurable trip to Manhattan than we have had thus far.

NEILL SIMON will be LIVE at the opening night Champagne Celebration of COME BLOW YOUR HORN on Saturday, June 2nd at 7:00pm at the Fort Tilden Chapel. There will be music, dancing and decadent desserts. Why not send Neil Simon a complimentary ticket to come by ferry? Then call the networks to cover the event. We have to make every effort we can to draw attention to our plight. Now, with summer approaching, this is the time to do it. If you want to see Neil Simon in person and attend the show you better hurry and make your reservations. Only $25 and the proceeds benefit "Programs in the Park".

In regard to shutting down the school boards….Howard Schwach is right in so far as some sleezy members have ruined it for others by extortion and various crimes, though he is, in the long run, for continuing it. To tell you the truth I am on the fence in this case. Our schools are in such a shabby mess I am almost inclined to try another way. Perhaps we should give the Mayor a chance and appoint a Commissioner to oversee where the money for the schools is going and how it is used and how well the teachers and students are doing. We still have our Parents/Teachers Associations and perhaps a delegate from each district could report back to the parents and offer suggestions for improvements. I really am very much inclined to say, "Do away with the School Boards They haven’t done their job."

If you read the G-Man this past week you can see how much cover up there still is in the schools. Of course, we haven’t heard the other side so we can’t jump to conclusions to judge too soon. But, from his story, the case should have been handled more delicately.

Don’t forget the run on May 20 from Buckley’s to Fort Tilden for Heartshare. Joe Kilbride will be taking a trip to Boston at the end of May for five days. Tess Crowley is home from the hospital. Before she left she paid Al Martin a visit. He is still in Peninsula hospital if you wish to send him a card or see him. Not doing well.

At a press luncheon at the Italian Culinary Institute I discovered how great the food is even though prepared by interns. Most important though is that you can come to the Italian Culinary Institute for an evening and for $65 dollars learn how to cook Italian Cuisine and also have a beautiful dinner with appropriate wines with each course. To dine in New York City with wine etc. would cost you more. This way you learn how to prepare that dinner yourself to have at home. A reservation is a must. Paolo Villoresi is the President of the ICI and publisher and Editor in Chief of prestigious La Cucino magazine, Italy’s Best and Italian cooking and Living. He is also the host of a new television show called Italian Cooking and Living to promote authentic Italian cooking in North America. You will find it on your cable channels soon.

At the Roosevelt Hotel I met Eloise Pillarella, a courageous 5 1/2 year old Muscular Dystrophy patient from New Jersey, who was at The Bevie Mangia food and wine tasting and auction to benefit this cause. Some of the prizes auctioned were: weekends for two at elegant hotels, dinners for two, dinners for six catered in your home, tickets for TV shows, lunches etc, etc.

Feed the Hungry….Well, I certainly was hungry when I got to the Grand Hyatt for the Taste of the Nation (Share our Strength) Gala event. But, I must admit, I was not hungry when I left. This is one event you should not miss. Go next year! It is a food festival of your wildest fantasies with the best chefs from the best restaurants in town. The food, wow! It was to die for! I cornered one chef for a shot….Drew Niepoient who is the chef at Tribecca Grill. A fabulous evening. Proceeds go to help feed the hungry and homeless.

Some of you must say, "All that woman does is eat and drink". Hey, it’s my job to cover events around the city. Someone has to do it. But, to tell you the truth, I would not be able to go anywhere if it wasn’t for my Chiropractor. For over six months I have been suffering from a lower spinal disk disorder that presses on a nerve that runs pain though my buttocks and down my leg. A real ouch situation and I could find no relief until I went to Dr. Goldenberg on East 22nd St. in NYC. You may have seen him on one of my television segments this past week. Believe me, he has helped me tremendously. If you have a spinal or neck or headache problem try chiropractic therapy. Try that before you go for steroid injections or an operation. It may help you, too.

A new drink called Lemoncello was introduced at Della Femmina Restaurant on East 54th St. Very tasty as a cocktail or tall drink.
