Bus Drivers Respond

Bus Drivers Respond

Dear Editor;

I am a Bus Operator on the Q22 line. I agree with you that service in the Rockaways should be improved, but as to the jogger hit by the mirror, that was by a charter bus not a green bus.

I also ask you to come ride my bus at rush hour and see why buses are grouped. It’s not because of bad drivers or faulty equipment. It’s because we cannot force the people to board the bus and step to the rear fast enough to safely stay on schedule.

Not only are we (drivers) subjected to overcrowding and verbal abuse, we are limited in our performance by old buses thanks to the DOT that has promised us new equipment but never seems to come through. And as far as nasty drivers, there are always bad apples in the bunch. I personally haven't had a problem on the Blvd. but I'm a friendly person. The one thing that sticks in my mind is RESPECT: you give it, you get it.

If you want the other side of the transit situation in Rockaway, talk to the bus drivers. There are two sides to every story.
