A few weeks back the Wave ran a story regarding the horrible flooded
conditions of the ball fields at the old Broad Channel Day Camp facility.
Commissioner Murphy who has always been a great supporter of the B.C.A.C. visited the site and reassured us that his department would do its best to get the fields in playable condition.
Knowing that these fields are in phase #(2) of a (4) phase project
some people felt that the Parks Department would just wait for the completion of the project which is scheduled to resume in the summer of 2001 and having the fields phase completed by the summer of 2002. After meeting with newly appointed Parks Manager, Joe Bonkowski, and Supervisor, John Dwyer, I knew that we at least had a good shot of having playable fields for the upcoming season.
In a matter of just a few days, Joe and his crew did an outstanding job and we now can be at ease knowing that the fields will be at least playable for the upcoming 2001 baseball season.
So, on behalf of all the children that will enjoy a season of baseball here in Broad Channel, I would like to thank Commissioner Rich Murphy, Parks Manager Joe Bonkowski, Supervisor John Dwyer and the entire staff at the Rockaway Parks station for the great job they did for the kids and saving what appeared to be a lost season.
