Far Rock Flips For Double Dutch Duels

By Emanuel Jalonschi

Skips, jumps, hops and even flips were all to be seen this past Saturday, March 7 at the Sorrentino Center. The community center was the host of the 19th Annual Rockaway Double Dutch Championships

With festivities beginning at 10:00 a.m. and competition beginning at 11:00 a.m., teams from all over Rockaway and the country came out to showcase their jump rope talents. There were elementary school kids as well as high schoolers skipping and flipping as fans cheered on.

About 100 or so parents, friends and fans packed into the Far Rockaway gym. They were treated to displays of both stern discipline and extraordinary athleticism.

The event was organized by Coach Stan Brown with the help of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Coach Brown also heads up the world champion Stan’s Pepper Steppers double dutch squad. They have toured and competed all over the United States as well as the world. They are quite the celebrities and have been featured on television several times. The Pepper Steppers were also the hometown favorites at the competition and had the support of a large portion of the crowd. Still, good sportsmanship was the word of the day as parents and friends were seen cheering for everybody.

The teams that competed ranged from the third grade level to the High School level. However, kids of all ages could be seen stomping it up during intermission.

Team from all over New York City, Suffolk County, Maryland and Washington D.C. were at the competition. The gym was so packed that in preparing for the competition, Coach Brown was swamped with requests to compete. "I had to turn down seven teams," says the double dutch veteran.

Coach Stan Brown’s Pepper Steppers brought their "A-game" to the competition as they won four of the six divisions. Stan Brown’s Pepper Steppers won the third grade division. The fourth grade division was won by visiting Greenbelt, Maryland. Stan’s Baby Pepper Steppers won the fifth grade division. In the sixth grade division, the Suffolk County Snazzy Steppers were victorious. Stan’s Junior Pepper Steppers took the seventh grade division. In the High School Division, Stan’s Pepper Steppers were victorious.
