Police Identify Body Of Christopher O’Brien
Found Floating In Icy Waters Of Jamaica Bay
The body of 38 year old Christopher O’Brien was found floating in the waters of Jamaica Bay by the Breezy Point inlet at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2001. O’Brien had been missing from his Breezy Point home since Saturday, December 30.
Detectives of the 100 Precinct continued the investigation for the past two and one half months, but came up with very little in clues to O’Brien’s whereabouts. An immediate canvas of the neighborhood where he lived was negative. A search of the area around O’Brien’s home provided police with no new clues, and they immediately reached out to the community in hopes that someone may have seen him or had knowledgeable of his whereabouts. Yet, nothing new came up to help solve the case until O’Brien body was found on Friday evening.
He was reported missing at least once before and ended up being located in a Queens hospital. He suffered from bipolar manic psychosis.
According to police, on March 5 the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office made a positive identity of O’Brien through dental records. The cause of death and the amount of time he was in the bay have not as yet been determined. Police did not rule out foul play and the investigation is ongoing.
