Being the publisher of the oldest community newspaper in New York City was a job that Wave publisher Leon Locke did not take lightly. Logging over 80 hours a week on a slow week, Leon was rarely far away from his desk at The Wave. Rockaway residents could always expect to see Leon at his desk or scooping out stories from his favorite chair in the front window of The Wave building. Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown recently announced the indictment of 10 individuals in connection with a lucrative drug operation that sold cocaine to street dealers in Far Rockaway out of two seemingly legitimate stores on Mott Avenue. Six of those indicted are street dealers and four defendants are charged with owning and/or operating the stores. One of the principals in the business and one of his employees are fugitives for whom warrants have been issued. More...

The Wave and the Rockaway community suffered a great loss last Friday, February 23. Wave Publisher Leon Locke passed away after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. Leon was more than a businessman.... he was a man of the community. He gave many hours to helping the community, whether it was a volunteer EMT, festival chairman for RMAC, founder of the Rockaway Museum, or serving on Community Board 14.
