The Wave and the Rockaway community suffered a great loss last Friday, February 23. Wave Publisher Leon Locke passed away after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. Leon was more than a businessman.... he was a man of the community. He gave many hours to helping the community, whether it was a volunteer EMT, festival chairman for RMAC, founder of the Rockaway Museum, or serving on Community Board 14. He used his paper to serve the community, advocating what was best for Rockaway, He truly loved this community. He will be missed...

LOOKING BACKWARD What The Wave Said 20 Years Ago This Week
Looking to casino gaming to serve as a catalyst for the redevelopment of the midsection of the Rockaway Peninsula, and for expanding the economic base of the Rockaway community, the Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways and the Ad Hoc Committee for Casino Gaming in the Rockaways formally combined respective groups this week to form the Committee for Casino Gaming in the Rockaways, Inc.

On The Beach
This column is dedicated to Wave Publisher Leon Locke whose untimely passing has rocked our world. It is almost eerily ironic that for a man whose life was dedicated to publishing and reporting the news of a community has now, with his passing, become the front page news; and how we of the "Wave family" have the excruciating task of reporting his passing. Although I really didn't know Leon well, I was given by him the opportunity to write this column for his newspaper...and to him, I am grateful.

Short Takes
It is difficult when a good friend passes from the scene. Your first thoughts, of course are that he died too young, too quickly to do all of the things that he wanted to do. The second thoughts are for his wife and his family. Then, you begin to remember all the little things that made him your friend. So it is with the passing of Leon Locke, the publisher of The Wave and my good friend for the past dozen-plus years. He passed last week, too young and too quickly to say goodbye. I remember the little things: Leon sitting in the front window of The Wave building on Beach 88 Street, watching the passing traffic and developing story ideas; Leon and his wife, Susan, joining my wife and I and often, others, at Pier 92 on Saturday nights for good food, good conversation and good internet jokes; His love for the Mets and for the dirty water hot dogs that he ate whenever his wife and his health allowed; His love for the QE2 and the time he spent telling us in detail about the ship and the ports that he and his wife enjoyed so much (he was proud that he had traveled to six of the seven continents on that great ship); His wit and his wisdom; His genuine desire to help the community; His excitement over each year

Simon Says
I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great leader, inspiration and fighter for the Rockaways, our own Wave Publisher Leon Locke. Leon has been involved through the years for the benefit of the Rockaways. His sudden passing brought to mind that God needed a special angel to run the cloud version of The Wave in heaven. God needed a special man who he could depend on as a loyal great angel.
