Stella Maris Seniors Shine
The Stella Maris' Varsity Basketball Team concluded their regular season league schedule with victories over St. Saviour and St. Edmund.
The St. Saviour road win on Tuesday, February 13, was sparked by seniors Alana Bell (23 points/12 rebounds), Jeanine Kenel (22 points/10 rebounds), EJ McElroy (6 points/14 assists) and Dawn Gallagher (3 assists/7 rebounds). EJ McElroy's selfless point guard play created numerous high-low options which Alana Bell and Jeanine Kenel consistently connected on, as the Lady Flippers coasted to a 60 – 40 victory.
Then on Thursday, the Stella's senior squad defeated St. Edmund in their final home game of the season 54 - 28. Prior to tip-off, the Lady Flippers hosted a ceremony wherein they paid tribute this years' four graduating seniors. Other honored guests included family, faculty, cheerleaders, students and Stella Maris' administration. However, seniors, Dawn Gallagher, Alana Bell (Co-captain), EJ McElroy (Co-captain) and Jeanine Kenel (Captain) were this Senior Day's main attraction and deservedly so. They then donned their home whites and graced their home court the final time.
Dawn Gallagher opened the scoring with a trey from the boulevard. EJ McElroy consistently found either Jeanine Kenel (high) or Alana Bell (low) to keep the hard working St. Edmund Eagles at bay. Junior Dana Di Marco continued her yeoman-like efforts on defense, before fouling out. Freshman, Natalie De Sanctis showed a glimpse into the future by draining a couple of perimeter shots and another Frosh, Marybeth Raphael continued to dazzle and amaze her teammates with pinpoint passes through an array of Eagle defenders.
For the game, Alana Bell lead all seniors with 27, Jeanine added 15, Dawn Gallagher totaled 5 and EJ McElroy, once again hit double digits (10) in assists. The GCHSAA Varsity DI playoffs take place on Thursday, March 1st. Stella Maris plays St. Francis Prep at Prep, tip-off 7:30. Even after a long and injury plagued season, the Lady Flippers still find themselves alive in their quest for a Division "D" Championship three-peat.
