From the G-Man by Gary G. Toms

Hey people! As the race for city council starts to heat up, I will be writing a number of columns about the significance of this election. While there will be some, and I do mean a select few, who will genuinely have Rockaway’s best interest at heart, others will be seeking the seat for their own selfish political gain and will not do a damn thing to help improve Rockaway. Beware!

There are rumors circulating about the number of people that plan to run, but I won’t fall suspect to the rumor mill. I will simply wait until all of the players come forward and prove just how serious they are about running. It would make no sense to speculate at this point.

One thing that is clear is that many of the candidates are going to be seeking major endorsements in and around the community. Some will be subtle and sincere in their approach, and others will have a Colgate smile and a manipulative heart. Beware!

The good-natured candidates will have the side of truth behind them, and they are going to be willing to expose certain facts about the Rockaways that others are always too quick to dismiss. They are going to be willing to risk their candidacy, by making people uncomfortable with the truth, in order for the voters to be able to make an informed decision. They are widely regarded as the village idiots or town criers, but in actuality, these are the messengers of the community, and they will have all the things that are necessary to prove their statements. Even if you think they might be full of crap, listen to these people.

The silver-tongued devils will mesmerize you with their charm, intelligence and smooth manner, but there will always be one thing that gives them away. They are the ones who will seek to distract you from the true candidates by telling you their opponent is crazy or bitter about the status quo, and they almost always seem to be linked to everyone and everything, and they will promise you the world. However, the things that many hold dear, truth and integrity, are absent from their world, and the only thing that matters to them is title, power and prestige, and they will screw you over in a heartbeat if given the chance. They are nothing but political puppets. Beware!

The true fighters will walk in the company of angels and their ancestors, and they will find a way to touch your heart and spirit. They will try their best to make you comfortable. The liars will slither their way into the voting mainstream, and they will leave nothing but dismay, half-truths and uncertainty in their wake.

Many of the contestants will attend,

and call for, town hall meetings and discussions in the guise of saving the community and righting certain wrongs. The fact of the matter is some will have a hidden agenda, and you can bet a monkey’s nipple that it will be political. Listen! Don’t just hear them. Listen, and hold them accountable. Challenge them whenever, and wherever, you can. They need you more than you need them! Once you do this, you will begin to see a pattern developing, and it is at that point that you will be able to tell who the true dangers to the community really are. I can assure you of that.

There are many that believe a good person cannot survive in the political world. The system is too corrupt, and even if they start out good, they will succumb to the pressures, and realities, of the political world. I used to believe this, but recently two words changed my way of thinking: Nelson Mandela!

I know many people are ready for a fresh change in the Rockaways, and they see the attempt to repeal the term limits as a complete joke. I won’t say if the reps have performed good or bad. What I will say is that eight years is more than enough time to try and get the job done, and after that, it’s time to bring in some new blood. This will be a very important election, and the truly good candidates should not be denied the opportunity to make the Rockaways even better.

See you next week!
