Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

By Jim Hurley

Each year, the Knights of Columbus invites it’s individual councils to participate in an international free throw championship.

On the smaller scale we have the local level also known as the council level. In our area the local council is the Rockaway Council no. 2672.

The Rockaway Council no. 2672 held its contest on January 23 at the St. Camillus gym. The council and the participants extend their thanks to Father James Dunne, pastor, and the parish for the use of their gym.

The participants for this year’s event hailed from as far east as Beach 3rd Street to as far west as Beach 143rd Street.

The council level winners are slated to participate in the next level of competition being held at Cathedral Prep which is located in Elmhurst. The address is 56-25 92nd street. The competition takes place Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. Present at the next level of competition will be 10-year-old Michelle Kenel, Allana Quinn, Samantha Swensen, Suzanne Hurley, Steven Calciano, Danny Edwards, and Justin Baylosis. Each council level winner was presented with a winners medallion, a certificate and, of course, instructions to the next level.

The Knights of Columus wish a special congratulations to three of the council winners that shot an exceptional 11 of 15: Allana Quinn, Justin Baylosis and Suzanne Hurley. Also they wish to thank their core of volunteers Joe Valenti (Grand Knight), Mike Suglia, Jim Hurley, Jim Vitale, Joe McKenna and Bill Mahoney.
