Angels Win Christmas Tournament

The South Queens Angels won the Christmas tournament at Island Garden. The team, based in Rockaway, won the seventh grade division of the tournament. The Angels collectively outscored their opponents 263-135.

They’ve been plating in the eighth grade division in the Summer League, against older and stronger competition. This paid great dividends when the Angels returned to seventh-grade level.

The local girls made good account of themselves. Jill Brady scored her personal tournament high of 53 points. Katie Pastino and Corinne Howley scored 28 points a piece and played outstanding defense. Corinne Howley led the team in assists with eighteen. Mary Grace Brady had 24 points and 8 assists. Erin Casey had a great defensive tournament. She also scored a key basket off an assist by M.G. Brady to secure a hard-fought win going into the championship.

Naomi Houston played a key role, scoring 50 points and nabbing 24 rebounds. She went on to be named Tournament MVP. Jennifer Anglero made All-Tournament team, with a team high 56 points and 28 rebounds. Keyona Rivers, playing her first tournament with the team, scored 13 points. Maissa Habb, who could only make the last game, helped the team post a convincing 75-43 win in the Championship game. Jill Brady, who had a strong overall tournament, scored 19 points in the final game.

The team is currently fighting for a playoff spot in the Super League.
