Bishop Kearney High School Sports

and Elizabeth Garvin
By Carolyn Gennaoui

For many years, the Kearney swim team has been chanting, "You can’t beat the green!" On Sunday, January 7th, they proved this to be true, while swimming against long-time rival Fontbonne Hall. With no seats left in the stands, the toughest, most exciting and most challenging meet of the season began.

Throughout the meet there were many exciting races. In the individual free-style, Kristin Mullen placed first; Stephanie Hernandez placed second and Samantha Gray swam her personal best, beating her personal best time by nine seconds. In the 200 individual medley, Carolyn Gennauoi placed first, followed by her teammates Pamela Tadross (who did her personal best) and Siobhan Garrity. In the 50-yard individual freestyle, Sarah Garvin placed third, her personal best. In the 100-butterfly, Carolyn Gennauoi was neck and neck with a Fontbonne swimmer until the last moment, when she pulled ahead and won by an arm’s stroke. In the 200 free-style, Samantha Gainy, Kate Fiorella, Sarah Ross and Elizabeth Garvin put up a strong fight for first place. However, they received points for their second place.

It all came down to one race, the 400 free relay. Sarah Ross, Carolyn Gennauoi, Stephani Hernandez and Kristin Mullin swam their hardest and placed first. When this relay placed first, the meet was theirs, with a score of 91-79.
