Opossum Sighting

Dear Editor;

I was walking my dog at 12:45 a.m. on January 30 along the boardwalk and sighted a male opossum about 25 feet ahead. As I approached within approximately 12 feet I was surprised that it was not very wary of my increasingly excited German shepherd or me.

I am certain it was a male as I checked some sites online and they
stated that the male is darker in color than the female and this darker
coat contrasts with the lighter colored face. Also, of course, the rat-like tail, cat sized body, and nocturnal
nature all further substantiate this sighting.

I don't think too many people keep opossums as pets but I suppose it is
possible that it is escaped and not
indigenous to the peninsula.
