Inner Voice....by Marilyn Gelfand

Inner Voice....by Marilyn Gelfand

Last week I was taking a walk on the beach when my instincts led me to turn around after only walking two blocks. I saw a bird lying on the shore unable to move. On closer inspection, I saw that the bird was wrapped in a thin fiber. I though it was stuck on a fishhook, and I could only remove the material from its hind legs. I looked around and saw two women and a dog in the distance. I hoped one of them might have a pocketknife. They approached, but I could not free the bird. One of the women suggested that she get a box and we take the bird immediately to Gateway. I was so glad that these women appeared when they did as there were several dogs on the beach and I knew I could not help this bird by myself.

We hurried over to Gateway and discovered that our bird was a loon. A loon is a special bird for my new friend Joan and her family. They spend time in Minnesota on a lake with loons.

Gateway rangers directed us to a vet on Cross Bay boulevard, who freed our bird from the fish netting it was trapped in. He was half frozen, and when I discovered him the tide was coming in and I was afraid he would drown. The vet kept him, and Joan and I had time to talk to each other and have a bite together. I was astounded at how I felt the Universe provided the bird with salvation as I had a strong feeling to take a walk just at that particular moment.

Joan said she was supposed to meet her friend earlier in the day, but her plans changed. We were there crossing paths together to meet to help this bird live. I realize how important the Universe’s timing is, and also that all of the creatures on the Earth are important and valuable. I feel that if I trust my own instincts, I and my loves ones can also be led to safety in trying times.
